3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

War.... Is this something new? No, there had been wars, over 4,000 years of history the old testament records probably a half dozen wars or more, but since the advent of Christ wars became more prevalent.  Also wars were always for power or land, but now a new trend begins to develop, the trend of holy wars. The muslims warring to take Israel, the crusades to try to drive them out in the name of Christianity, and even today we hear the phrases of Holy War. Wars between nations based on religious principles is relatively new.

5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

While there has always been a division of rich and poor, in general through out the Old Testament, even slaves or servants were treated good and were fed by the land owners. A wise servant back then may have inherited his owners farm. and in the old testament, you had a wide range of wealth levels, siminlar to America, but in the past two hundred years there has been an overall elimination of middle class and you have rich and poor. I believe there was a heightened separation and even stigma between the rich and the poor.  Rich people over the past two hundred years have become even more rich and powerful.  Banks have influenced national laws, they have financed both sides in wars.  We who live in America for the most part are ignorant of what goes on in the world because this is called the land of opportunity, but even here until the unions came into place, people worked in sweat shops, truck drivers were made to work a dangerous number of hours, and were paid meager wages in one direction on delivery, but drove the truck back empty without pay.  Look at the Titanic, the history of this one ship shows something of human nature, steerage were locked in the bottom deck when the ship was sinking, they were looked down upon, people with money have climbed above the human race in their own minds, and the poor are like cattle and expendable. The poor have no place in places catering to the rich and famous. Slaves even in America were in large part poorly treated, whipped and beaten, dehumanized, and even after slavery they were still hunted down, beaten for being in the wrong place, etc.
