Genesis 2
Verses 1-3
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished: Here Moses is declaring that the work of creation had been completed. Everything was in balance and perfection, animals and plants grew created in harmony to each other and were prepared to live indefinately in a world that would never wind down until the fall of man. There were no thorns or thistles, vegetation had been created to provide sustinance for the animals and for man as well.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. Here God finished His work from creation and rested from this work, however it is qualified by the statement, "which He had made" as God does not cease working, but rather finished working in the form of "Making" or creating new things. The earth was complete, but it is necessary for God to continue working in order to sustain the things which he had made.
Psalms 104
27 These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season. 28 That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good. 29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust. 30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.
Jesus when accused of working on the Sabbath day said to the Pahrisees, my father works, therefore I too must work. (John 5:16-17 16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. 17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.)
God rested on the seventh day, but only from the work of creation, in all that He made He saw that it was good, and now His providential care is a pleasure to Him, not a form of work.
